Income Tax Notice: How to check Income Tax Notice is fake or Not?

Now a days, Money frauds are common. Fraudster has left no space and no person. Now a days, Many people gets message with the name of Income Tax department about income tax notice for tax demand with the link to pay taxes. Some of them when click on link or pay through that link which unfortunately make them lose their all money available in their bank account. One must know how to check genuiness of Income tax department communication received in the form of notice or order. How to find whether income Tax notices or order issued are genuine or fake, lets find in the article.

 

1. How you can check that Income Tax Notice is Fake or Not?

The Income taxpayers who received notice or order from the Income Tax Department are now able to check whether Income Tax Notice received is actual or fake. This can easily be checked through the facility provided by Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT)- Income Tax Department on its official e-filing website.  According to CBDT circular issued in August 2019, every income tax notice issued by the IT department must have a computer generated Document Identification number (DIN).

In October 2019, the tax department launched a searched facility on its e-filing website allowing users to check this. The search facility allows a user to search for orders /notices using 'Document Number' or 'PAN,  Document Type, assessment year, Notice Section, Month & Year of issue'. The CBDT says that documents pertaining to any assessment year can be authenticated. However, as the CBDT has started mentioning DIN from October, 1 2019, this facility may not be usable for old documents.

The reason is that DIN will be printed on the notice or order issued to you from October 1 onwards, as per the department's press release dated August 14, 2019.

The IT department now will only send mail to your mail id, to login to your e-filing account and check the demand notice, if there is any pending demand of tax from you. They don’t send any sms or text message. 

2. How to Check Income Tax Notice by the Govt. I-T Portal?

Step 1: Visit Income Tax efiling website at www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in

Step 2: Under the 'Authenticate' tab , available below the 'Quick links' tab, Click on  'Notice/order issued by ITD'.  You will be redirected to a new web page.

 

 

Step 3: In the new web page, you will get two options which will let you check the authenticity of the notices/orders you have received. For this, you can use either document number or PAN, Document Type, assessment year and Date of issue, whichever way you want.

Step 4: Enter valid captcha code and click on submit

 

If the issued notice/order is valid or authentic, the same document will appear on the website or it wont be displayed if it is fake. Also, you will get the the text message-‘Yes, notice is valid and issued by the income tax authority’. For Sure, this facility will help you in finding veracity of the notices/ orders received from the IT Dept. This facility will help tax payers to identify fake notices or orders.
